Where or where do all the lady bugs go in the winter. They are one of the few that hibernate. I’ve seen the back of my house covered with ladybugs and they find ways to get into the house. I’ve always wondered how.
Just after the new year my son David and I went to one of the State parks in our area of Delaware. It’s called Cape Henlopen. They have some large towers that are Silent Sentry’s from the WW2. They were observation towers that were built along the coast.

I’ve got at least 75% of the bed done. It took another 15 bags of soil and I edged it with 2 bags of mulch to keep any side erosion down until I can mulch the whole thing.
So far I’ve got the Toad Lilies planted, the ferns and several Hosta stubs that I found around the property.
Here’s one of the Hosta. It’s a really pretty variety with a creamy white banding to the center.
Line of Toad Lilies with some Hosta to the back.
This is one of the pla...

I was cleaning up the basement – ramping up for a whole new slew of projects over at LJ, and in the process found several seed starting flats – with plastic lids. Mini greenhouses for several dozen seedlings! I knew, but sort of forgot I had these. Will be great to get the garden going, once I get my seeds ordered.
But what I didn’t know I had – and still was pining for – is a Japanese Hori Hori Knife – Knife/Trowel. They run about $30. I know I ordered ...

Ok guys, I have lots of questions and don’t know where to start. I’m so desperate for spring and wanting to get my hands in the dirt that I decided to start early this year…perhaps too early. I bought a Jiffy Pot thing with 72 little peat pods in it. And started planting away. I guess I caught a wild hair this year, I’m working on some Ruby Red Corn, some Artichokes, my easter egg plant from last year, zinnias zinnias and more zinnias and some lumina pumpkins to na...

I had to go to town today so i made a couple other stops and did some garden shopping :D 1) I bought some blue pansies to put in my “frog pond” flower bed—3 metal frog sculptures surrounded by the blue pansies which looks like water if you use your imagination.
2) three blueberry bushes. —location for them yet to be determined
and
3) fish.I got 2 shubunkins (is that the right word?) and one little goldfish (maybe not a good decision after rea...

There are many reasons to save seeds from your garden. Aside from biotechnology arguments that are making the news and the fact it can save money; the bottom line for saving seeds is because you have a plant you love and want to grow it again or share it with others.
Seed catalogs offer limited seeds. Saving and sharing seeds from around the world gives you a better opportunity to find unusual varieties.
Seed saving is not only simple and rewarding; it gives you something to do du...
