Chickens in the garden

361 days ago by XploreOrganics | 37 comments »

Before we moved to our new home we discussed having chickens. We would get a few for eggs and perhaps even a few meat birds…BOY WAS I WRONG. I should have known better that with my personality those birds would win me over – BIGTIME. We moved into our new home and that summer decided to get 3 hens of almost laying age off a local farmer. We would not name them in fear of getting “attached”. When we spoke of them it was the red one, the black one and the mu...

My Container Gardens #1: The Beginning ... Finding just the right containers ...

296 days ago by GrandmaT | 21 comments »

I began pondering last fall about what I could do with a patch of earth that lined the whole side of the house and a portion of the driveway. This strip gets lot of sun and heat, all day. What came to mind was a Container Garden. Now I am not talking about just filling a few pots with flowers and calling “it a day”. What I have in mind are items that I can repurpose; or unusual garden pieces; or items that are just pretty to place among the flowers and various containers. So to...

If you’re not ready to run out and buy seed envelopes, make your own beautiful seed envelopes by recycling that xmas papper…Great fun on a stormy evening for the whole family. Beautiful christmas paper should not end up in the landfill. It is always exciting to see the lovely handmade envelopes that get sent to me when trading seeds. I sketched up a diagram on how you can make your own simple self-closing seed pocket. Enjoy!

297 days ago by XploreOrganics | 16 comments »

Although we have a very short growing season and are limited in the fruit varieties that can grow here, I am very lucky for the numerous wild berries that grow in our area. Wild blueberries are abundant although due to urban sprawl many blueberry picking areas are disappearing and the ones that remain are being harvested more densely but even so we still have a bountiful supply of these extremely tasty little berries. Wild Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) Another common be...

Our Pond #1: From a speck of water to...

543 days ago by MsDebbieP | 13 comments »

As we build our personal retreat in the backyard, we seem to just go with the moment and build/add whatever feels right. This spring we decided that we would put it in the ground: just ma...
