A few years ago I was invited to participate in HGTV’s Landscaper’s Challenge. Although I have my own company, Garden Mentors, I do take subcontracted design work from time-to-time. My connection to the show came with a company for whom I do design work from time-to-time.
Someone has posted the video of my Landscaper’s Challenge episdoe on YouTube. Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s-7tyuZ6YU
Enjoy!

Seeds? Starts? When? What? Why? How?
These are just a few of the many questions I get about vegetable gardening. Learn more about my thoughts on starting vegetables here: http://www.gardenhelp.org/gardening/gardening-from-seeds-or-from-starts/. If you’re in the greater Seattle area, this post will also help you find a few great plant sales for edibles and ornamentals in spring.

Yesterday was a morning marvel, with the sun glistening on the frosted trees. I took a couple pictures and thought I’d share. I guess this is Mother Nature’s entry in the “Garden of Lights” event. She surely did a fabulous job with her gardens – and her lighting. My photography did not do it justice.

Yesterday I was thrilled to see that the Seattle Times ran an Associated Press article written by Dean Fosdick on Garden Coaches entitled Garden Coaches Boost Skills, Confidence. Dean had called me in late December last year to interview me on being a garden mentor. I knew him as a regular gardening writer for the AP and was very happy to speak with him about my experience with and passion for garden mentoring. Dean and I spoke about many aspects of garden coaching. And, Dean spoke with many ...

Ok guys, I have lots of questions and don’t know where to start. I’m so desperate for spring and wanting to get my hands in the dirt that I decided to start early this year…perhaps too early. I bought a Jiffy Pot thing with 72 little peat pods in it. And started planting away. I guess I caught a wild hair this year, I’m working on some Ruby Red Corn, some Artichokes, my easter egg plant from last year, zinnias zinnias and more zinnias and some lumina pumpkins to na...

What a difference a week makes:
last week:
this week:
The chives are almost touching the light, and it looks like I’ve got to prune the basil a bit. The idea is to keep all the herbs growing at about the same height before I raise the light. Looks like the mint and parsley need a little help. The dill on the other hand is doing too well – just to spite me. (I don’t care for dill). It’s starting to fill in the spaces between its neighbors. It better not touch t...

The Helleborus Plant commonly called “The Christmas Rose” or “Lenten Rose” is fast becoming one of my all time favorites. It’s a beautiful perennial that makes an awesome indoor plant as well.
Initially inside keep them in a cool place, with a bright sunlight, but not direct. They like their soil moist, but not wet. Once established, they will tolerate a little more dryness and warmer conditions. Fertilize in the spring/fall. However do not fertilize in the he...
