My best crop, this year, I’d have to say were my green beans. Now, I’m not a huge fan of green beans, but since I’m trying to live off my land as much as possible, I’ve made myself enjoy them.
Other than “fresh off the vine”, I think I’ll save next year’s crop mostly as pickled beans. This year was the first time I’d even made or eaten pickled beans and I love them! The recipe I used turned the beans into the equiva...

I can’t wait for our cherry tree to have cherries on it! We’re getting close. Maybe next year we’ll have a few handfuls, if we can beat the birds to them.
The following is from the Fall, 2008 issue of “Open”; the article is by Lee Anne Andriessen
according to the Cherry Nutrition Reposrt, cherries contain 19 times the beta carotene of blueberries and strawberries
they also have: vitamin C/E, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate, fibre ...

Oh the yummy beat – especially when it’s pickled!!!
In the “Open” magazine, Fall 2008 issues there is an article by Michael Fisher, Whole Food Nutritionist.
here are some of the key points in the article:
very good for the heart
helps measure intestinal transit health: the red pigment of the beet should take 18-24 hours to pass through the system
very high levels of iron and so is good for the blood

I got the idea late and seeded late but the test results were fabulous.
These are ,witihout a doubt, the most flavour filled delicious tomatoes I have ever grown!
I will be making special provisions for them in the ensuing gardens.
I think I made reference to them earlier but I can’t locate the thread right now.I also grew sweet 100’s in a tub and, as I forecast, I got more than 1000 toms from 3 plants.

For a couple of mornings we had some gorgeous red skies, which prompted me to remember the old saying;
The first morning the sky was brilliant red but the second had layers of clouds which made the colouring very interesting.

Well as this years gardening season has come to an end for me I am reflecting on this past year and the year(s) to come. First let me say that part of my reflection starts as a child growing up on a small hobby farm and always having a huge garden that of course needed to be weeded and taken care of. Man as kid then a teenager I hated that garden. I would of rather been in the barn with the animals doing that fun stuff than sitting out in the hot sun pulling weeds that only seemed to grow ...

Every Wed of the year, except 2 weeks at Christmas and New Years, the Mason Dixon Woodworkers get together to make toys for Christmas. We pass them out to 20 different charities on the first Sat of December.
We meet at a workshop of a previous member who passed away 2 years ago. He told his wife that he wanted the woodworkers to continue to use his shop as long as we wanted to make toys.
Irv was a wheeler dealer in the town of Delmar De. he had a local Oriental gentleman, Mr Wie, plant ...

I moved to the 4,000 foot elevation in the Sierra’s eight years ago from the California coast where I had a one acre truck garden. I used to sell to numerous restaurants and many friends. After moving I knew I would have a hard time and just gave up after moving. Finally after eight years I realized how much I was missing the garden. Late this spring I fenced in a small spot and made a late planting. I have harvested a few basic vegies and then three days ago we had our first freeze and...

Was having a cup of coffee on our front porch this morning and couldn’t get over how beautiful this Ash Tree is. I have been watching it slowly turn for weeks now. I do love this time of year with it’s vivid colors, sweatershirts and wonderful crisp air!!
What are you seeing around you that is just gorgeous this Autumn? How about snapping a pic or two and sharing it with us … I’ve started … :-)
