Irrigation #1: Back Yard Watering Spigot

296 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 1 comment »

Well, the yard at one point in time had a spigot in the back yard, which is great because the veg garden is waaaaaaay in the back. But it was in such poor shape it wasn’t worth saving. As such I set about digging a trench and laying down pipe. I was lucky enough to have the pipe on hand, you see, it was at one time what supported the grapes. Not the best thing and I’d already replaced that with wire. So. My plan for this whole thing is a semi permanent system in which there ...

Garden Plannings #2: Planning the back run hedge.

297 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 12 comments »

Well, I’ve been spending alot of free time lately digging through the catalogs and online stores trying to figure out just what I want to do with the back run. For privacy reasons we want to do a live fence along the back. Live because it’s cheaper, and better for the wildlife. It’s not exactly a short run, but it’s not that long either. At about 110’ I figure I’ll need 17-18 bushes. My main idea all along has been to do a row of Elderberries. To be p...

Wild Berries #1: Wild Berries in Newfoundland

297 days ago by XploreOrganics | 16 comments »

Although we have a very short growing season and are limited in the fruit varieties that can grow here, I am very lucky for the numerous wild berries that grow in our area. Wild blueberries are abundant although due to urban sprawl many blueberry picking areas are disappearing and the ones that remain are being harvested more densely but even so we still have a bountiful supply of these extremely tasty little berries. Wild Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) Another common be...

Uncommon Visitor

298 days ago by MsDebbieP | 15 comments »

After Mike’s posting re: common birds seen and then XO posted her photos, it brought to mind this photo that I took last summer. So, I thought I’d post a picture of our LEAST common visitor. I saw it for the first time last summer (I mean—first time – had never seen something like this before) – and we saw it maybe 3 times all together one weekend. When describing it, I said that it looked like a hummingbird but fuzzy like a moth. Turns out that it was a gr...

I think about 60 of them. yicks! I still keep hoping to see my Sea Holly but they are not showing themselves yet. Boy am I impatient or what?
