I moved to the 4,000 foot elevation in the Sierra’s eight years ago from the California coast where I had a one acre truck garden. I used to sell to numerous restaurants and many friends. After moving I knew I would have a hard time and just gave up after moving. Finally after eight years I realized how much I was missing the garden. Late this spring I fenced in a small spot and made a late planting. I have harvested a few basic vegies and then three days ago we had our first freeze and...

Was having a cup of coffee on our front porch this morning and couldn’t get over how beautiful this Ash Tree is. I have been watching it slowly turn for weeks now. I do love this time of year with it’s vivid colors, sweatershirts and wonderful crisp air!!
What are you seeing around you that is just gorgeous this Autumn? How about snapping a pic or two and sharing it with us … I’ve started … :-)

Well, end of season is around the corner for us, so we’re pushing to get a few more things canned.
A few days ago I spent a few hours in the apple tree doing my best monkey impression. Needless to say apples flew everywhere, so we got a bunch.
Tonight after supper (cooked a ham on the grill. Freakin great!) we went ahead and started working on apples for apple sauce. I think I split and checked half of the apples we’d collected.
In total we have 27 quarts of apple sauce r...

This past week has brought us a couple mornings with frost and so it was time to tackle my Amaranth flowers, to gather their seeds.
In the past, without knowing what I had planted, I just let the flowers cascade to the ground and drop their seeds. We did get some survivor plants grow the following year and that was fun.
This year, I planted the Amaranth because the seeds (and leaves) are edible. We didn’t touch the leaves this year. I’m not much for salad...

We were chatting with my brother yesterday about garden crops and dirt nutrients and the conversation ended up talking about onions.
Info I came away with:
onions like a consistent, steady level of water during their growing season
dry spells mixed with bursts of water result in the onion getting an outer skin embedded between layers of “onion”
the uneven watering also results in the rotten areas in the middle of the onions.
I had posted other advi...

Looking back over the summer I think the plant that gave us the most pleasure throughout the season was the Barley.
Looking back through my notes (that I thought were quite thorough) I wanted to see when I planted my Barley. I remember thinking, later in the spring, that I could have planted it even earlier. Unfortunately I did not write down the Barley planting date. I did however say that I planted the Quinoa on April 23. The Quinoa didn’t like being out in the o...

Can we create our very own Eden? What tips can we share with each other to help create a more sustainable garden and what does sustainability mean to you?
Points to think about would be:
If we could not purchase or import any garden products such as soil, fertilizers, pest control, seeds and the like can we actually make our gardens so sustainable that we can make use of everything we have on site?
What about fuel? Can we find alternatives to gas powered tools, mowers and tractors?...

The cooler weather is making it alittle easier to get into the gardens and start cleaning up. Because I have so many iris, I have to start cutting the tops and cleaning the plants in order to keep them healthy and discourage grubs. It’s a good time to pull out dead and dying foliage too. I try to do some transplanting while I’m at it.———-But mostly I spend alot of my time just admiring the flowers that are still going strong.
Lots of cosmos, these ones ar...

I just love fall mums and all the varying colours. The pink ones were cut from my garden as they were getting quite floppy.I purchased the pot of yellow mums … just because!I have these sitting on a wooden chair by the front door. They are so cheery when I get home from work.
