My hens are great. They are funny, friendly, and fastidious workers. My daughter made a “Girls Working” sign to put out when the “girls” are on the job. They help me clear undergrowth, de-bug the garden, cultivate the soil and leave fertilizer. The “man” (main rooster), watches out for anything that could be dangerous. The chickens work hard all day. They are not abused, coerced, or under duress. We love our chickens, and they all have names. They i...

Does the right hand know what the left is doing? Sure! They’re all in bed together!
To me, it seems that there is a major conflict of interest in the folks running OUR government agencies, making LAW in OUR government, and supposedly watching out for OUR environment & food (EPA & USDA). Well mybe it is only a conflict in reference to the citizenry of America. They probably feel no conflict at all since they can forward Monsanto’s interests while sitting in the govt....

I think it’s fun to create little nooks with the form of rooms outside. This is a spot in the back that I’m blocking in.
I’ve got the posts in the ground and will cut them off at a level point before attaching the white rails that you see. They were actually cast iron decorative supports for a slight porch overhang that we decided to change and took these with us. I’ll be painting them flat black and will most likely brush a little green onto them to give a litt...

I’d been working to get a spot in the yard built up to use as a fern bed. It’s prone to flooding and turns into a nice little pond when we get good rain. It’s also shady with two trees and the huge Pecan tree shading the area.
This makes it a great place for ferns and other shade plants that can take the water, or not, since only part floods.
You can see the water pooled to the left of the picture. I’d already built the area up with 2 and a half bags of peat moss...

I’d actually had this finished off for a bit but been tied down with work and unable to do much free time postings.
Once the pipe was in the ground and the trench was back filled with the plugs of grass stamped back down all that was left was to finish off the spigots and get the water to it.
This is a shot of the yard spigot out beside the figs. I’ll be framing a box around it with some left over cedar that I used on the gates of the fence.
The water is actually deliver...

Sweet Baby Pepper Stir-fry with Long-grain & Wild Rice
I’m starting to get a little tired of the palette of white blanketing my garden so it was a nice surprise when I found these colorful baby peppers in the groceries. I decided what a great way to get into the spirit of spring by enjoying a colorful meal with sweet crisp peppers on a bed of mixed rice.
I never use instant rice; I pre-cook a variety of rice and have it on hand in the freezer. Left-over rice always taste...

On Saturday we stopped at Rona to pick up some stuff and at the front door were packets of Garlic. Enticed by earlier discussions here at GT about planting garlic, I grabbed a package of elephant garlic just for fun.
Now, where does the bilingualism come into this, you ask? Well, yesterday I took a look at the directions to see how/when to plant it. The directions were great until it came to the depth required. There, in the inches and in the centimeter measurements were ...

Hooray, it’s Sunday morning and I’m off to the Flea Market!! Can’t wait to see if any new vendors are there. Hoping I have better luck than last week …
Park the truck and in I go … Wow, looks like I might have better luck. The second vendor I walk by has several huge, old stock pots, in many different colors. Those would be really pretty planted and for $5.00, I’m sold.
Now, I had been lamenting at hubby about my failure to find that child’s old...
