Serve it with a flower! #2: DOS and DONT'S

274 days ago by Eklectic | 2 comments »

Picking Edible Flowers: Pick your flowers in the morning when their water content is at its highest. Cleaning Edible Flowers: Shake each flower to dislodge insects hidden in the petal folds. After having removed the stamen, wash the flowers under a fine jet of water or in a strainer placed in a large bowl of water. Drain and allow to dry on absorbent paper. The flowers will retain their odor and color providing they dry quickly and that they are not exposed to direct sunlight. Preservi...

Planting & Landscaping #2: Outdoor Room: Darn Near Done

274 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 6 comments »

Well, here’s the finished fence section. Well.. Almost finished.. I need to trim the posts and put finials on each of them. My wife asked that I not paint it black and to leave it the rusted white, so I did.. Saved me work! ;) Each side is screwed into the pole, where the “feet” of the porch supports are, I took a 2×4 and chiseled out two squares so that I could slide the rail into it and make sure it was well supported on the post. You can see that I’...

Planting & Landscaping #3: Fern Bed Close to Fruition - Need More Diiiiiiiiirt..

274 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 5 comments »

Well after a long bit of work with the not so good help of a grumpy 2yo, the bed is closer to being finished. I still need at least 10 more bags of dirt however, as well as more cardboard to finish off the right hand side. Then there’s the matter of mulch, which I’m not even thinking about right now. So far this is working out really well. The cardboard is keeping the grass, leaves, peat, etc in place and making sure it doesn’t compact while I work to get the top f...

Back from Wal*Mart

275 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 3 comments »

Well.. That was a disappointing trip. Apparently last night was a busy night with two trucks in. Tonight? One small truck… Not many boxes at all to choose from. It’s all good though.. I’ve got some decent boxes from housewares. Most likely not enough to finish up the cardboard layer, but enough to start.. Oh well.. Going to catch up on my RSS feeds then turn in.

Planting & Landscaping #4: More work on the fern bed

275 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 7 comments »

Well, I put more work into the fern bed this afternoon. Ended up mowing a half an acre of neglected yard to get some organic matter to build up the section. I only had the push mower with a bad to do this. It was several… several trips to dump the back under the tree. I’m pretty sure this will be the last layer before I lay down cardboard and put some filler soil over all that. Here’s a Robin happily browsing through the pile while I was working on it. Got to hand ...

My Little Garden

276 days ago by Lady G | 6 comments »

The pics did not come out as well as I had hoped, its still very overcast here today. I am not a “Great Gardener” with a limited budget we all know that is hard to do, but my little ones make me happy. Whenever I need some peace and calm I just pull up a chair next to them and read a nice book. These two are my little space in the back This is a small space I snagged out in the front The name of the mountains here is the San Gabriel Mountain Range Here is another pi...

Serve it with a flower! #1: Edible flowers

276 days ago by Eklectic | 4 comments »

These are only a few edible flowers you find in your garden! We tend to forget about them but they are tasty, full of vitamins and pretty as well! Borage: Borage has a cucumber like scent and flavor. The vivid blue flowers make a striking addition to a salad or a last minute garnish to cooked foods. Calendula: (Pot Marigolds) The petals work well in cooked and fresh dishes. Calendula is also used as a saffron substitute. The yellow or orange petals will color and flavor foods when chopped ...
