Planting & Landscaping #7: Garden Updates: Garden Plot, Ferns & New Flower Bed

252 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 6 comments »

I haven’t been posting the goings-on much lately. I guess it’s just because we’ve been so busy, or maybe it’s because I’m starting to feel like the little things aren’t so earth shattering or important. Either way, I felt an update is in order on what’s happening around the homestead. For those who have seen the “Fern Bed” project of mine, happily most the ferns are doing quite well. I’ve got two however that don’t seem t...

Our Flower Gardens #3: By the Pool

252 days ago by MsDebbieP | 19 comments »

April 28, 2008 On “the list” for a couple of years has been to put our old wire dog pen sections around our pool area. This year, it is happening. We (ok, Rick) dug three holes for posts and then we attached two sections of the dog pen to the posts. We decided to do just one side of the pool at a time. Enough digging, already!!!! The goal of the fence, although it should be for safety reasons for the pool, it will have another purpose. As for safety, I’m positive th...

Our "Edibles" #3: Blueberries

252 days ago by MsDebbieP | 16 comments »

April. 28. 2008 I finally got my blueberries! After years of “someday” 2008 was going to be the year that it happened. I tried ordering them from the place I got my strawberries but they were all out already. Doh… there was a moment of panic, let me tell you—for a brief moment I worried that I wouldn’t be able to find any bushes (silly thought but I thought it anyway). Friday, I bought three bushes at a garden centre and some peat moss. Yesterday I picked u...

Seedlings

253 days ago by robertandvi | 1 comment »

I guess I should have blogged about the seedlings that I have started. I started some jalapeno peppers about a month and a half ago and they are almost ready to go outside. I started them in a peat pellet and keep them in a mini greenhouse. I then transplanted them to a bigger pot using soil that I bought from my local Dollar General. The soil already contained fertilizer so I thought it would help the young plants out. The tomato varieties that I have chosen is Roma VF and Organic San Marzan...

I have already begun our garden down here in South Texas. But I have decided to make changes to it before it gets too late into the season. You can track our garden under our project page as well as on the blog. I will try to blog a couple days a week about the garden. The square foot garden won’t be started until next weekend but the container garden is well under way. The tomatoes in the buckets are doing fantastic. Monday they will receive their first dose of liquid fertilizer. Hopef...

New Deck #4: Day 5 and Day 6 of the deck build.

254 days ago by Karson | 3 comments »

Well Day 5 of the deck build had me starting on the Light poles. I made a wooden tube that was about 5 3/4” on each side. Three sides are glued together and the forth side will be attached with stainless trim screws, which have a smaller head. They have square drive. The posts are 8’ long and are 83” above the deck to the top of the wooden post. In the uphill side the post is about 12” in the ground. One the downhill side the post is on top of the ground, but...
