New Deck #7: Well the first bench is done.

249 days ago by Karson | 13 comments »

Well is was a good day for working outside. A little cloudy, a little sunny, a few drizzles, but nothing to make it unbearable. I failed to take pictures of the straight bench being made, but, here it is. The seat is 14 1/2” wide (4 – 1X4’s) The straight bench was designed as 5’ long, but then trimmed to final fitting. So it’s a little longer as sitting here. The legs are 2X4’s 17” long with a 3” rail at top and bottom with 1 1/2”...

Planted more greens

249 days ago by Jerrica | 5 comments »

Yesterday I planted kale, swiss chard, and tat soi. The best way to prepare kale, ever: Kale chips Wash and dry the kale leaves. Tear the leaves into bite-size pieces, and put these in a bowl. Don’t include the stem. Sprinkle about a tablespoon each of olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the leaves, and mix until they are all coated. Sprinkle sea salt, to taste, on the leaves. Cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper, and place the leaves in a single layer on the sheet. Bak...

New Deck #6: Finishing the deck surface and fixing the electric problems

249 days ago by Karson | 5 comments »

Well I finally got the electric problems taken care of and so i screwed down the last two deck boards. These boards butt up against the two light poles. And I did the finish cutting of the curve. So here are the details: I mentioned earlier, I believe in the first blog of this series that I installed a GFCI circuit breaker in the fuse panel and i was having problems where it kept tripping whenever i put a load on the circuit. Even a load as small as a Dusk to Dawn switch with nothing el...

New Deck #5: Treated Wood

249 days ago by Karson | 5 comments »

Someone asked the question if I was going to treat the wood that I used on the posts. That was something that I forgot, and i was planning to write about when I made the posts and enches. When I was at the big orange home supply center I saw some new treated wood. It’s by Thompson’s, its called Thompsonized wood he wood was not the normal green treated wood. It’s more of a natural color wood treatment. This post is treated wood. The price is about the same...

What's up

251 days ago by Jerrica | 6 comments »

...in my garden today? Six of the eight asparagus plants have come up. They’re as tall as asparagus should be, but the width of an alan wrench. Assuming they’ll be thicker next year? I can’t harvest this year, since the plants are new, but at least this signals I can start looking for fresh asparagus at the farmers market. Two rhubarb plants are up with barely any stalk and leaves the side of my hand. Again, can’t harvest, but can check the market. Peas an...

Frost

251 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 23 comments »

Well, seems they did indeed end up issuing a frost advisory, which means either patchy frost or wide spread. So, a night trip to Wally*World to pick up plastic was in order. I picked up 4 roles of 10’x25’ plastic thinking it would cover everything. Ended up not covering about 15’ of the bed, so, I guess when I expanded the bed I forgot to factor in the size with my thinking. Bed is 65-70’ long.. I’ll measure it tomorrow. No biggy though. We had several plas...

My Container Gardens #6: Need opinions ...

251 days ago by GrandmaT | 26 comments »

Okay, my daughter thinks I should NOT paint the milk jug and leave it “rusty” ... she says it has more character this way. Me, I had not even thought of that; just assumed that I should paint it. Now I am torn as to which way to go in the Container Garden … what do you guys think??? Below, a photo to remind you of what the milk jug looks like “rusty”

mini greenhouses and self watering container gardens

252 days ago by scottb | 4 comments »

I came up with this idea when I stumbled across a dozen or so 8# kitty litter containers in the basement. Gonna give it a shot – and not have to wait for the end of next month to get the garden going OR even bother with transplants! Has anyone seen the self watering container info in the latest Mother Earth News? Anyone tried this or have similar tips on these ideas to share. – after my success with my indoor hydroponic garden i’m excited to give this a shot too!

Grab your coffee and let's take a walk ...

252 days ago by GrandmaT | 18 comments »

Got your coffee?? Did I make it right; enough cream, sugar?? Would you like to see a bit of my front garden, everything is coming to life?!! I so love this time of year … I am excited to see how much growth there will be from last season; as this will be our second summer in this house. All the plants, except the roses and Japanese Maple, were transplanted from small pieces of my most beloved plants from our old home. We still need to add mulch to the bed, but I want to wait until...

My Container Gardens #5: Last two items ...

252 days ago by GrandmaT | 14 comments »

Have found the last two items for my Container Garden. Both of course will need to be “attended to”. The rusty milk jug needs to be refinished. I bought a Black Mat Finish to spray on it and depending on how ambitious I feel I might decopague a few flowers in some sort of border. The chair needs a hole cut into the seat (thanks Hubby!!!) so that I can drop a pot filled with flowers in it. I am going to leave it white … I have been so anxious to begin this Container Garden...
