The Bog Garden Journey for the 2008 Season #3: Buds, Flowers and Traps oh my!

230 days ago by syble | 5 comments »

Well, with how things go in this buisness I have been swamped at work so have slacked a bit online… Allow me to remedy that! So things are really beginning to move and shake in the bog. Many of the Sarracenia (NA pitcherplants) are heavily budded with some plants haveing 2 buds per point even! Finally getting close to having open flowers, they’re fully extended and beginning to nod. My hybred x catesbaie recieved from a friend is looking to be the first to flower, and looks to ...

Around the Yard #2: Some minor updates

231 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 8 comments »

Just wanted to put up a few shots of things around the yard right now. The “invasive” plants my father in-law gave us are doing nicely beside the power box. All are in bloom and look really good together. The poor ring around the light pole of lilies seems way over filled to me. I’ll be pulling out some of the more productive lilies to make room for the others. Grapes are doing nicely. The lone grape vine that we kept is full of grapes, and the new plants we...

A day at the CSA

232 days ago by Jerrica | 5 comments »

I belong to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture for those of you not in the know) and one of the requirements for membership is to spend a work-day on the farm. So yesterday, my husband and I rolled out of bed to be on the road by 7:15, get to the farm by 8, and begin our work-day. DH was in charge of getting directions to the farm. He did not write them down, so we got lost on the way there, natch. Maybe we’ll work on that one later. Arrived at the farm, were greeted by the...

My Green Strategy

232 days ago by Catspaw | 10 comments »

While trying to expand my gardens, there was one particular problem that started bothering me. Gardening should not be a series of back breaking tasks. As my gardens expanded, nature would take over very quickly. In order to keep up, my investment in labor became overwhelming. There was no way I could keep up with the weeds and bugs and such. Soon, the gardens would be a lost cause. I started understanding the strategies of mechanized farming. Instead of hand grooming this plant and that, it ...

This pathway started the first year we moved here. It ever so expanding depending on our needs and the wood that is available at the time.We do not cut the trees for the walkways, but when they are dying due to old age or the wind finishes what the ice storm left behind, then and only then do we cut the cedars. We stack them and use them as needed for fencing or the walkway. It goes all the way around the house to where the garage will be build and has started going towards the forest and the ...

Time Flies... Eesh.

233 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 17 comments »

I don’t know how you all find the time to post so much this time of year.. I feel like I’ve been non stop.. In fact, I have been.. It’s been more than just the yard however, which has taken a bit of a back seat to household jobs that need done. Today, I worked on the “Pit of DOOM” stairwell doors. Essentially turned the stairwell to the basement into a deck, that opens up via three doors. With a 2 year old running around, it was extremely unsafe.. Heck, ...
