Due to time restraints this year my garden is not getting as much care as it should.I had to move the sq foots to build my workshop so some plants didn’t get enough TLCHowever my bananna potatoes did get into the containers I scrounged and are now peaking thru the compost / soil.
I will give the 4 plants a couple more days to leaf out and add more mix to the drum. That should net me some nice suppers in august.
Eventually they will be up to the rim with a humongous root system ...

Poor hubby. Kid called on his way to deliver grandkids for last day of school. “Hey, Mom, There’s a guy putting in a new driveway here on Old Kawkawlin Rd. He says you can have all the busted up old stuff you want to haul away!” So guess what hubby was doing by 0715 ! We loaded up between 1200 and 1500 pounds of concrete chunks, hauled it home, and unloaded it.Got enough to edge both shade beds, and at least make a good start on the fence bed, one layer high. Will need more,...

Well, the garden has really come along. Yesterday I put another bunch of mulch to protect my dear friends from the scorching heat that has been predicted.
Yesterday a neighbour commented on my front yard how nice it looked and that was such an encouragement then this morning much to my shock I found that the new park bench I got about 3 weeks ago had been stolen. I didn’t even get to take a picture of how nice it looked. It was red and with container pots on either side, it really se...

I decided that I’m going to post pictures of the daylilies first blooms throughout the year.
Since I’d skipped a day, this is yesterdays first bloom.
Isolde
Now, some times the first blooms are not the best and may be slightly deformed, like the petal on the first one is halved. It happens on firsts. Just use your imagination on what the whole thing looks like. ;)
Anyway, on with the show.

Well, today is the day. Over the past week, we have had mixed weather conditions and I’ve been very busy with other stuff and so my gardens have taken a backseat.
Each morning and evening, as Rick and I sit in the gazebo, I stare out at the gardens (through the screens and the mosquitoes) and watch the weeds multiply before my eyes. Each day I say, “today I’m going to get some weeding done” and then something comes up and I don’t get to the tas...

I don’t have any pictures of the process but it was pretty straight forward.
Dig a hole
Knock dirt apart in wheelbarrow
Mix 50/50 with compost
Place tree in hole
Backfill keeping crown high, leaving 1” space
Cover with pure compost
Lay down cardboard
Mulch
That sums up my evening adventure. I’ll take a few snaps tomorrow at some point in time and post them up.

Today, the first nice sunny day in quite a while, was the perfect day to plant the tomatoes and peppers! They are planted intermittently as peppers and tomatoes are companions. As well, marigolds all over to keep away pest. On the peripheries of this bed, I will be putting in some more garlic as well as some dill. All that is left is the mulching: the cardboard is soaking and I went to the Feed store today and got 4 bales of wood shaving. I will need at least 4 more which I will pick up tomorro...

Well the mulch was delivered today. 8 scoops, which breaks down to 4 pickup truck loads. It’s rather fun to play in, love the smell.
For size, and a side shot of the pile. Stuff in the back is a wetvac and a vanity that are going to be picked up as trash.
I’d also been working for the last two nights to cover the flower bed along the back and side of the fence. Because the back was pre-planted, I needed to cut wholes in the cardboard for the plants. That was a trip.

Remember to put your mouse over the pics for more info :)
We have about 1/8 of an acre of fir, spruce and scrubby woods in our back garden. This year I wanted to make use of it yet at the same time keep the woodland feel. Our trees are very spindly so the majority of my time I spent with my Fiscars lopers and some hand pruners thinning out trees making room for others to grow.
The paths just took on a life of their own, I had no real plan just shape and trim keeping the nicest trees ...
