Every year I put many of my house plants outside for the summer and bring them in come fall. My Christmas cactus always buds up as the days get shorter and cooler. If I bring it inside too soon many of the buds stop developing and drop off. This year, I left it until the last minute and then put it in my unheated garage for a couple weeks. Last week I finally brought it into the house, still putting it in an unused room in the house that just has natural light (no lights in the evening). ...

This Dwarf Gaillardia in my front garden is just blooming away despite the cold, wind and SNOW. What tickles me about this little plant is for most of the summer I got nothing from it other than beautiful leaves. Maybe it just wanted to be the “star” of my garden … all alone … just blooming away!!
And then I found a few rose buds on one of my ground cover roses … I do love the raspberry color.

Yesterday I wasn’t feeling well and so I made some home-made chicken soup. In it I put some of my home-grown barley. I’m not sure what made me feel better – the chicken soup or knowing that I was eating some of the barley that I had grown in my yard this summer!!
Regardless, it warmed my body, my heart, and put a smile on my face.

While looking at GT stats, I found out that we have launched GardenTenders one year ago. Looking into the past I realized that we really managed to do many things – we’ve organized 2 Awards and 2 Challenges, and we have drawn attention of 350+ gardeners from all over the world.
So it’s time to blow out the candle
and celebrate with nice chart summary of the 1st LJ year:
I would like to thank all GardenTenders and everybody involved in making this site such a fasci...

Going north on the H-2 on Oahu, you will run into the Pineapple Plantation. I am a pineapple grower myself (potted pineapples, http://www.twinoaksgrowers.com/plants/6pin.htm ), so this was a treat.

Located at the upper (mauka) end of Manoa Valley at the end of Manoa Road. It was a nice .8 mile hike. Climbing over roots and through mud to the waterfall.
This was the restroom on the way to the fall.
Not the best picture, but there were pink flowers in the trees.
The waterfall from far.
These were some small ferns, But there were very large tree ferns too.
Closeup of the falls.

It’s 65 degrees here and windy. I just put in 3 rows of onion sets, two rows of lettuce and 1 row of carrots. The color in the trees is amazing and some leaves are starting to fall. At night it has been getting down to 38-40 degrees and warming up to mid 60s-70 during the daytime. This is my first fall garden since moving here. That’s why I’m being pretty conservative on my planting. I’ll keep you posted. I’m also running my smoker this afternoon and have 2 racks...

For this one, we had a few of the early season jars of apple sauce that didn’t quite work out right and had turned a bit at the top. We’d water bathed them (learned, it’s needed) to break the cycle which was fine, but I figured we’d just pull them, scoop the top and make apple butter out of the rest.
Apple Butter
9 quarts of Applesauce
2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon of allspice
4 cups sugar
