Planting & Landscaping #13: Ugh, so Burned out.

149 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 26 comments »

Well, I’ve got most of the 35 or so daylily clumps into the ground. Ended up placing some in a temp location till we decide exactly where they will go. It’s been real, real tempting to go back and get more but I finally called that idea out and shot it down. Though it’s wonderful sticking a clump into the ground and having that “always been there” look of the giant mass, it’s more than I want to muck with for the remainder of the year. That said, I...

My Container Gardens #6: Need opinions ...

205 days ago by GrandmaT | 26 comments »

Okay, my daughter thinks I should NOT paint the milk jug and leave it “rusty” ... she says it has more character this way. Me, I had not even thought of that; just assumed that I should paint it. Now I am torn as to which way to go in the Container Garden … what do you guys think??? Below, a photo to remind you of what the milk jug looks like “rusty”

Planting & Landscaping #14: Oh my.. I made a mistake..

Garden Plannings #7: New Flower Bed

88 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 25 comments »

Well, I went to Lowes again. This time for hardware, but I made the mistake of going through the garden center. I picked up several kinds of speedwell as well as some sage and coreopsis. I got most of it for $2/pot, with a couple that were 75 cents. Add to that the chokeberry and those 4 unknowns I’d got for 50 cents a pop and I’ve got a full bed. To add to the mix, our friend David who does the daylily farm had someone come in and move some large trees, so h...

A Sad Day

124 days ago by MsDebbieP | 25 comments »

July 19, 2008 Note: This isn’t garden related. We had to say goodbye to our cat “Gizmo” this morning. At 8:00 I left the house and he was at his dish eating. At 8:30 I get a call from Rick that there is something wrong. He heard the cat making a terrible meow and when he found him, the cat seemed to be paralyzed. We took him to the vet and after a few tests they still didn’t know what was wrong and Gizmo’s temperature kept dropping even though they had ...

My Carolinian Forest #3: New Nannyberry

202 days ago by MsDebbieP | 25 comments »

May 2, 2008 Last year, I purchased a pawpaw tree and a nannyberry. Two weeks after planting, one of them was attached by the lawnmower. I couldn’t remember which tree was which and so I’ve lost one but don’t know which one. Today I went back to my tree nursery and purchased a second Nannyberry. Of the two it is the nannyberry that I really don’t want to lose. So I either now have 2 nannyberries and no pawpaws or I have, once again, one pawpaw and one nannyberry. ...

Losing Control of Our Food Supply #2: Short & Sour: An admission from Monsanto

235 days ago by Robin282 | 25 comments »

AAAAHHHHHRRRRGGGG! Well, at least someone is finally admitting it…: A high representative for Monsanto has openly admitted that “We want to control the world’s food supply.” also: Monsanto who provides 90% of the world’s long list of genetically engineered products11 (having bought up 50 smaller companies during the last decade) does their business with such complete secrecy that there are still sold-out individuals out there… In spite of the reassura...

Are gardeners crazy?

290 days ago by Eklectic | 25 comments »

After looking at Dahlista’s profile and projects, I looked around at all the projects done and/or planned and was overwhelmed by the amount of work going on in all of our yards! We dig, we carry heavy loads, we plan, we plants, we weed, we harvest, we…....And then we say we are just enjoying ourselves!!! And we never stop, because it is never done….there is always this or that little bit to…. I read what I just wrote, and it does sound like work and work and...

Arizona Color - Who knew!!

85 days ago by GrandmaT | 24 comments »

Our children and grandchildren are all in Arizona now and when hubby and I decided that we would follow them; I found my heart tug a little. I have been an avid gardener now for over 33 years and assumed with this move that I would have to give up my gardening. After all, what could I possibly grow in the heat and sand out there. I had pictured this very hot, flat and brown place. Boy was I WRONG!! My first visit to Arizona was last summer (2008). I went for 8 weeks to be with our daughter...

Our "Edibles" #11: Weeding my "Salad Garden"

121 days ago by MsDebbieP | 24 comments »

Yesterday I went out to weed my “salad garden” and all was going well until I felt something biting my leg. I look down and my foot is covered in ants. I had obviously disturbed a colony and they were NOT happy. They didn’t touch my left foot, only my right and I had a devil of a time getting them off and getting them to stay off. Ouch; ouch.. and more ouches on my foot, ankle, and calf of my leg.
